Neighborhood Bible study groups, in the outside
community or within a church fellowship, are simply an invitation to discover
the Bible. People remember best what they discover for themselves and
express to others.
As participants investigate Bible passages and share what they find
in a non-threatening setting, stimulating and relevant discussions result.
The structure of a small group allows members to get to know each other
as they spend time together. The support and caring that develop in small
groups increase enthusiasm for continuing study.
Small group discussion Bible studies within the church provide a welcoming,
affirming place for interested seekers, newly committed believers, and
maturing believers dealing with questions, doubts and struggles. They develop
a biblically literate congregation.
Building a Biblically Literate Congregation
Steps for building a solid foundation of Bible knowledge for teenagers
and adults:
- Plan a long-term strategy to develop a network of small groups. Start with
one pilot group whose members will become motivators and leaders of future
groups.
- Choose from the listing of NBS guides to fit
the present needs of your small group program.
- Review the basic approach of this lesson series, How
to Use NBS Discussion Guides, which is also listed inside each discussion
guide.
- Expect (but don't insist) that everyone participate in taking turns as
a group moderator.
- To start groups with people who are new to the Bible, read the handbook,
How to Start a Neighborhood Bible Study, and view the video tape.
